It's time to break out the debit card and hit the stores, because back to school shopping time is upon us. And that means investing in good-quality, basic clothes that will stand up to your kids' active lives.

Some people suggest not buying a lot until after the first day of class, especially if your child will be at a new school and gets the chance to take in the prevailing fashion trends. While that's good advice, certain back to school basics will always be in fashion. Here's our guide to the must-haves:

Since the earliest days, Hollywood has set the trends for America. We want Jennifer Aniston's hair, Lindsay Lohan's dress, and whatever else we see our favorite stars shining in on any given day. In recent years, however, it's Hollywood's kids and their fashion choices that have been in the spotlight.

Now, more than ever before, the toddlers and tweens of Tinseltown are hip, happenin', and making best dressed lists right beside their parents. Here are five of the hottest kids in Hollywood that your kids (or you) may be looking to for fashion inspiration.

It's that time of the year that kids dread and parents have been counting down to since June. Back-to-school is around the corner. And that means back-to-school shopping.

Which, frankly, can be a drag. Your kids are having fuuuuuun. They don't wannnnna go back to school! Dreading it yet?

It doesn't have to be that way, Mom and Dad. Try to make the shopping trip about the kids, and they'll actually ... wait for it ... have FUN:

Future Trophy Wife T-Shirt, $7.50Believe it or not, it's almost time to go back-to-school shopping! (No, I don't know where the summer went, either, and yes, the thought of stocking up yet again on marble notebooks and folders and pencils makes me want to take a sedative, too.)

But the scariest thought of all? Buying back-to-school clothes, particularly for teens. It's easy when they're little and there's no chance that anything you pick up at Old Navy or Gap Kids is going to get your kid suspended, but once they're old enough to do their own shopping ... fuggedaboudit!

All you can do is try to get a good look at them before they leave the house in the morning and pray they don't change into something offensive once they get to school ...

You know, like one of these t-shirts:

Sending my daughter back to school, I feel your pain. So I have been scouting the best picks for this time of year -- and some of the best deals.

My friend Jen is a teacher, which is pretty neat because her dad was my favorite teacher back in high school. Jen was a grade ahead of me in school and if I had to have a fashion icon back then, it would be her -- she always looked cool with her Joan Jett hair and perfect eyeliner. Hey, it was the 80s. (Love you, Jen!)

Her summer break is winding down and she asked me to find her some looks for the school year. Which is funny, since I had always looked to her for style. I hope I can inspire her with these outfits as much as she inspired me with hers back then.

And even if you aren't a teacher looking for back-to-school outfits, these are great on anyone -- it's a collection of early fall trends.
