Teachers are some of the most important people in our society. They take on the huge job of educating our children while also managing to inspire and empower them as well. An elementary school teacher is inspiring a wave of positivity and love online after photos surfaced of an amazing moment she shared with one of her students. And the story behind the photo is even more special.

  • The photo was originally posted by Leigha Bishop on her own Twitter account.

"When your student is just so cute, you HAVE to copy her," the elementary school teacher wrote in her post.

  • The story was quickly picked up by another Twitter user who felt compared to share it.

Twitter user JArdoin_814 shared that Bishop complimented one of her students' hairstyles in class and promised to recreate the look on herself, but the little girl didn't appear to take the compliment seriously. So, after the little girl didn't seem to believe that she looked fabulous, the teacher decided to show up the next day with her own hair styled the same way.

  • In an interview with Teen Vogue, Leigha Bishop shared that she wanted to use the encounter to empower her students.

"With my student's hair being similar to mine, I thought what better way to show her how she inspired me to feel beautiful [than] with that same braided updo?" she told the mag.

The teacher said she wanted to help all of her students recognize their worth and encourage them to spread that message to their peers. "When students are valued for who they are as an individual beyond grades on a report card, they tend to want to be present in school and want to succeed in all aspects of life. This small gesture of copying a hairstyle also shows that students have the ability to inspire teachers."

  • JArdoin_814's Tweet received a ton of recognition, gaining over 38,000 retweets and 120,000 likes in days.

Bishop says she was overwhelmed by the response. "This is just me simply living my purpose," she wrote in a grateful thank-you message.

  • The responses to the teacher's inspiring story were resoundingly positive.

Tons of people reached out through social media to talk about how happy they were to see someone doing such an amazing thing.

  • Plenty wanted to speak about how important it is to have teachers like Leigha Bishop.

"Well done," said one person who was particularly inspired.

  • Others made it clear that Bishop's actions will have an amazing effect on young girls.

Specifically, young black girls who often lack positive representation when it comes to things as seemingly simple as hairstyles.

  • The teacher said she is incredibly happy to have been a source of inspiration and representation for her student.

"Ultimately, I am a teacher who sees my students as whole people and not just bodies sitting in my classroom," she told Teen Vogue. "I am a woman of color, and I want to pour positive light into children of all races and ethnicities."
