The holidays are typically a time for families to come together and celebrate. So as we all head off to join our loved ones, it's important to keep military families close to our hearts, as many won't be able to come together with the special people in their lives who are off fighting for our freedom and safety. Ashley Sistrunk is a mom of four whose touching Christmas photo of her military family (complete with her deployed husband) is moving beyond words and a visual reminder that love knows no bounds.

Ashley's husband, Brandon Sistrunk, is a staff sergeant in the air force who, sadly, has had to miss holiday celebrations and important milestones -- including the birth of three of his children. He is currently away in Iraq on deployment, but this Colorado wife and mom was not going to let distance get in the way of her family's sharing a holiday moment together.

So this mom thought of the next best thing and created this heartwarming -- and extremely creative -- Christmas photo card.

"This one is more 'us.' Merry Christmas, from our family to yours!"

Ashley hopes her family's Christmas photo can be a reminder to other military families that they aren't alone. "You can feel mentally alone and emotionally alone even though you know that they'll come back and you pray that they'll come back. But hopefully them seeing that we're getting through it, they can get through it too," she told KKTV 11.

She also said:

Having a piece of your heart across the world, fighting for your country. It's just a whole other level of emotions .... We tell the kids, 'Yes, other kids have their daddy home right now.' But their daddy is out being a superhero, keeping our country safe and that's important ... that's an important job.

As a wife and mother myself, I can't even begin to imagine what Ashley and families like hers experience, especially around the holidays. I'm blessed to know many military families (some members of my family serve) and have seen the pride they have for the loved ones they kiss who head off to keep this country safe. There's so much strength in the military spouses left behind as they do their best to stay positive and hold down the fort until their beloved gets home.

Ashley's family Christmas photo made me stop and take pause. It's incredibly beautiful and touching and makes me not take the time I'm able to spend with my family for granted.

If ever there was a need to remember the meaning of the season, it is now. Forget the gifts, the items you jot down on your wish list, or the amount of time you spend decorating your home. Family is important, and family is what really matters.

Thank you so much, Ashley, for sharing this Christmas photo with us. I'll never be able to fully comprehend the selflessness and sacrifices military families make for the greater good, but can only reiterate my thanks and gratitude.

Happy holidays, Sistrunk family. I truly hope it's warm and full of beautiful memories, no matter how far away Brandon might be.
