CoverGirl's New Face Is a Hijab-Wearing Mom & She's Changing the Beauty Game

CoverGirl's So Lashy! mascara campaign already has an impressive stack of ambassadors -- Katy Perry and Sofia Vergara front the gang, and Internet faves like Chloe x Halle and James Charles, the first-ever CoverBoy, fill out the ranks. The latest addition is as badass and boundary-breaking as the rest: Nura Afia is a Muslim beauty blogger and mom who's been rocking trendy beauty looks on Instagram since 2012.

Nura is CoverGirl's first hijab-wearing ambassador, so of course this is big news. Though hijabi women have been gaining more visibility in the beauty and fashion worlds in the past few years, there's still a great deal to be done in terms of representing them in a fair and accurate way.

Which is why we're excited about Nura. Obviously.

Nura told Refinery 29 that she's excited about her role as a CoverGirl ambassador because it's time Muslim women are told that big brands value them as customers and that they're equal to everyone else. She said:

I'm doing this because I want there to be a time when my daughter grows up when she knows she can be anything she wants to be. It doesn't matter what her beliefs are or what she looks like.

That's something we can relate to, and we're glad CoverGirl has become such an active avenue for change. The crew they've gathered for their So Lashy! campaign is killer, and we love every single one of them:

James Charles is on the far left, next to DJ/actress Amy Pham, Sofia Vergara, Halle Bailey, Nura, Chloe Bailey, and Katy Perry. This is the group starting to bring some much-needed representation to mainstream beauty, and though we're still not all the way there, we're thanking these beautiful people for the work they've done so far.
