Can you even begin to imagine the shock and relief his parents must be feeling? Most blankets -- chosen because of a popular color or beloved character -- wouldn't be able to act a shield. Yet the LA Sheriff's department is crediting the bedding with saving the boy's life:

Fortunately ... he was wrapped in a heavy blanket. The impact of the bullet only caused a large bruise and small burn on the victim, but did not penetrate his body.

Incredible! It's stories like this one that remind every parent, as much as we may plan and have every intention of protecting our kids, so much is out of our control. It's unfathomable to think that this innocent child could be nearly shot to death in his crib while he slept, yet it's equally astonishing that a simple covering could keep him alive.

Police and the boy's family believe the shooting was completely random, and the child's mom, Maribel Hernandez, calls her son's survival "a miracle."

It truly is, and we can't help but wonder if this will change the way this mom parents her son going forward. Does it make you more protective or is it proof that there's only so much you can do to keep your kids safe?

Either way, it's wonderful he survived thanks to such a random item. So many children have favorite blankies -- we're guessing this is one that's going to be treasured by this child and his family for years to come!

Have you ever heard of a common household item saving a child's life?
