Yankee Carlos Beltran Takes Time Away From Game to Grieve Loss of Son

carlos beltran jessicaThe Yankees experienced a devastating loss far greater than anything on the ball field. Carlos Beltran and his family are mourning the loss of their unborn son. Beltran's wife Jessica had a miscarriage and Carlos has decided to take a leave of absence from his job as a Yankee.

Beltran's decision put his family first, and that is very honorable. The Beltrans have already lost two babies, both by miscarriage, before. A truly heartbreaking thing for a family to go through.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is giving Carlos as much time off as he needs to be with his wife and their two daughters as they grieve. Derek Jeter said:

He should take as much time as he needs. I don't know how much time that's going to be, but he should. I can't imagine how he feels. Like I said, it puts things in perspective. We sit around here and we talk about guys struggling and people being frustrated and teams losing, but when something like that happens, you pretty much forget about the game.

Baseball may be a game, but it seems that they are also a family with the players supporting each other off the field as well. That's so important in any working environment -- we all need to be understanding of personal matters and family should always come first. Thankfully Carlos has a job that allows him to take time off. And in this case, it's much needed. The Beltrans need to be together to heal. My thoughts are with them.

Does your job allow for time off for personal matters?
