5 Reasons I Could Never Live Without My iPhone

iphoneFor about two hours recently, I gave serious thought to getting rid of my iPhone -- and any cellphone in general. For the past few months, I've been trying to extricate technology -- social media, mainly -- from my life as much as I possibly can. I got rid of my Facebook account. I don't have Twitter. (I still have Instagram and can't see quitting that any time soon.) I try to spend less time on my laptop (often futilely). And the only thing left to wean myself from is my iPhone.

I love my iPhone, but I truly feel like it distracts me from fully being in the moment sometimes. And to be quite honest, I sometimes can't stand the sound of it ringing; dinging to signal a text message; or chiming to notify me of an email. I know I sound like a Luddite, but I sometimes just wish cellphones didn't exist.

That said, I really, truly could never live without a smartphone. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. I need it in case of an emergency. Yes, I realize I don't need anything with 3G and apps in order to phone for help in the case of an emergency, but I definitely need a cellphone -- especially since I have a child.

2. It really does make work more convenient. Whether I'm running out to grab lunch or getting stuck in traffic on my morning commute (like I did today), it's so much easier to have access to email on my phone instead of walking in to an inbox full of emails. Nobody likes that.

3. Texting is just easy. Part of me hates the text message because it's so impersonal and it's seriously distracting to everyday life, but bottom line is, in terms of convenience, you just can't beat it. Parents in particular don't have boatloads of free time on hand, so texting a friend instead of carving out time for a leisurely convo is much, much easier.

4. I would never have as many photos of my child. To be honest, I probably have too many photos of my daughter. When seeing the 900-some-odd photos of her on my phone, my father one day asked: "What are you going to do with all of them?" And the answer is: "I'm not sure." But I know I like having a camera with me all the time.

5. It's instant information, whenever I need it. If I'm out and realize I need the phone number of a business, or directions somewhere, it's all at the touch of my iPhone. Sure, I'd be able to figure things out the old-fashioned way if I didn't have a smartphone, but that's a pretty substantial luxury to suddenly go without.

Could you live without your phone? Be honest.
