Jill Zarin's Popularity Online Brings Out the 'Real Housewives' Claws

Omigahh, you guys, did you hear the latest?! Former Real Housewives of New York cast member Jill Zarin is totally up to some dirty shenanigans. Some real lowlife stuff. Some sleazy nasty horrible stuff! She's -- ready?? -- paying for Twitter followers!! GASP. Well, actually, it's just "show insiders" who think she might be involved in a pay-for-tweet scam. In an upcoming episode of Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live, Andy apparently asks Jill about it since Jill's Twitter numbers are so strong. Says the "insider":

No one believes [her followers] happened organically. Everyone thinks she paid for them.

Jill's response? ...

Jill is said to have looked shocked and said, "Are you kidding me?" That sounds so Jill.

Jill has always had more Twitter followers than most of the members of all of the Housewives franchise. When she left the show, she had around 250,000 followers. She now has over double that. Is it a lot? Well ... yeah. It's half of what Bethenny Frankel has, but Bethenny has her own show. And Jill isn't even on Housewives anymore. So it does beg the question, why would Jill keep getting so many followers when her platform is gone? By contrast, Brandi Glanville has 132,000 and Ramona Singer has 290,000, and they're both still on the air.

But a lot of people pay for Twitter followers. Talkin' to you, Mitt Romney. It not only makes you look popular to marketers, producers, branders, whomever, but it could up the price you might charge to tweet out about products. Plus you can say Nyah nyah nyah to all your haters who have less followers than you.

But there could be another explanation. It could be that Jill works really hard to have a fan base. She's extremely interactive with her followers on Twitter. In fact, she's the only Real Housewife who has ever acknowledged a tweet of mine. (Granted, I did meet her once, so perhaps that was why.)

Maybe this is just a bunch of jealousy from the show "insiders." It must be incredibly frustrating to be on TV and yet have half the followers someone not on TV does. The fact that Andy Cohen is even having Jill on his show (and that I'm writing about her) proves she's still popular!

Do you think Jill Zarin buys Twitter followers?
