Tracy Morgan Prank Worked Because People Still Believe Everything on the Internet

tracy morganDid you see the Emmys last night? It was the show with all the pretty people in glittery outfits telling each other how awesome they are while handing one another trophies. (You know, the show that was on the same time as the Obama/Romney interviews on 60 Minutes.) Anyway, since ratings for these self-indulgent Hollywood love-fests haven't been at an all-time high in recent years, host Jimmy Kimmel decided to enlist the help of Twitter -- and a Tracy Morgan "fainting" gag -- to see if he could boost viewership. Unsurprisingly, it worked.

At one point during the show last night, Kimmel asked viewers to tweet, "OMG, Tracy Morgan just passed out on stage at the Emmys, turn ABC on now!" Stephen Colbert and Joel McHale even got in on the phone, whipping out their phones to post the tweet. Kimmel then had the 30 Rock star lie down on the stage for the next 10 minutes. Shortly following the stunt, Twitter TV wrote: "OMG 25,000 tweets instantly thanks to OMG TRacy Morgan #Emmys -- thanks @jimmykimmel !! "

A strange little social experiment? Indeed. But, hey, it only further proves what we already know: Few things can match the power of social media. Twenty-five thousand tweets "instantly"? That's impressive. It's also slightly terrifying since it wasn't true. Twitter and Facebook and other forms of social media are no doubt a great means of getting information as it happens, but makes you think: We oughta fact-check once in a while instead of just blindly retweeting.

Do you see this tweet on Twitter at all yesterday? Did you believe it?
