5 Tricks for Getting in Shape With the Latest & Coolest Technology

woman runningWhen you think back to the first video gaming systems (like Pong, Nintendo, and Sega) or Internet services (like Prodigy, AOL), you realize what we have today is completely amazing. What's even cooler is that over time, technology seems to have gotten more active. Sure, there are still gadgets, gizmos, and games that require you to be sedentary. But we've definitely seen a surge in others that are all about being active.

In fact, it's not at all uncommon to incorporate technology into your fitness plan. Here, five ways to use what the 21st century has to offer to help you shape up ...

  1. "Exer-games" - If you've ever played with the Wii Fit Plus, PlayStation Move, or the Xbox 360 Kinect, you've probably "exer-gamed." Games like the Wii Fit Plus Rhythm Boxing or Xbox Zumba Fitness get your whole body moving in such a fun, easy way that it's hard to remember that you're torching major calories!
  2. Snazzy pedometers - Yeah it sounds like something only a grandpa could love, but there are so many cool new gadgets that will track how many steps you take a day. There are even those -- like the S2H STEP -- which convert steps or other activity into points you rack up for rewards. Other high-end models, like the BodyMedia Fit, will go so far as to track your caloric output by measuring things like body heat, sweat, heat flux (the rate at which heat is dissipated from your body), and your activity.
  3. High-tech scales - Digital scale? Ha! Try WI-FI scale. My soon-to-be brother-in-law swears by a Withings WiFi scale that actually communicates via Wi-Fi to sync to the Withings website and track your weight, body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage. It's supposedly awesome for tracking your progress over time.
  4. Awesome apps - Countless apps vow to support shape-up efforts. Some of the most popular include iFitness, a mini, digitized personal trainer, iMapMyRide (track your cycling), and iMapMyRun (track your runs, obviously).
  5. Workout-friendly headphones - If you're like me, you probably need some sweet tunes to move you along with your workout. Long gone are the days of those annoying headphones that got slippery, soaked, or went on the fritz once you started to shvitz. New generation models, like Monster's iSport are completely washable, sweat-proof, and waterproof, so you can even swim with them.
