Vanessa Bryant Loves Her Champion Husband Kobe, as Long as He Stays on Top

Kobe BryantVanessa & Kobe Bryant have had a, well, very interesting marriage to say the least (yes, I'm judging them). And now they're in the news again: She's made headlines recently for admitting that she wouldn't be married to someone who can't win championships. I guess this is the modern sports version of marriage vows nowadays?

Who knows, maybe she has every right to say this after these photos of Kobe shirtless surfaced at the end of July. Would there be any point to going through all that angst if your husband was a loser? I feel bad about myself just asking that question. Seeing as how sports marriages are lasting an average of 1.8 days (ahem, Kris Humphries, ahem, Chad Johnson), maybe this kind of mentality is the reason why these sports star marriages simply aren't lasting!

Kobe & Vanessa have known each other since Kobe was 21 and Vanessa was 17 (Kobe's now 33). In 2003, the infamous scandal with Kobe & the rape allegation took place. On December 16, 2011, Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, but they still managed to get back together. So I guess Vanessa reasons that she would never have stuck  with Kobe and all of this for so long if he were losing games as well.

Here's what she said, "I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year."

I kind of see her point in saying that the sacrifice that significant others have to make when married to sports stars means that they better be winning games to make it "worth" it. But it's such a cynical way to say it. So it's either win games or peace out loser husband?

Okay, so I can't imagine what it'd be like having one's husband constantly not around and him being super miserable about continually losing games on top of it. Still, you'd think getting married would be for better or for worse, regardless if your husband were winning or losing games. Don't people marry for love anymore? I'd naively hope she'd stick by him even at his lowest. Stop rolling your eyes. But I guess since Kobe and Derek Fisher are the active players with the most championships, he and Vanessa will live in happily ever after bliss ... as long as he keeps winning. And now maybe the two of them sleep with his Olympic gold medal in between them in bed. Wouldn't surprise me.

Do you think this kind of mentality is the reason why some marriages with sports stars don't last long?
