Young Champion Boxer's Spinal Cord Severed in Devastating Accident

paul williamsWhat should have been a fun weekend spent celebrating his brother's wedding turned into a nightmare for boxer Paul Williams, "The Punisher," after he crashed his motorcycle in Marietta, Georgia, and was injured so severely that he is now paralyzed from the waist down. (Awful!) When the accident happened, Paul fell on his back and neck, which caused his spinal cord to be severed. And while he's lucky to be alive -- his career in boxing is sadly over for good.

What really makes this story even more tragic is that Paul is only 30 years old -- so he was at the top of his game and really had his whole life ahead of him. And if that isn't bad enough -- he seems to be hopeful that he will eventually get back in the boxing ring. (Doesn't that just break your heart?)

His manager, George Peterson said, "He still believes he's going to fight again." Stranger things have happened, and plenty of medical miracles have occurred in the past, but with a severed spinal cord? Odds really aren't in Paul's favor to make a recovery as far as being able to move below the waist goes.

But if there are any positives to this story, Paul's attitude about his prognosis is definitely inspirational. While he's maintaining hope that he will eventually walk and fight again, his manager also reports that he's cracking jokes -- and says if he can't box, then he'll be a stand-up comedian. And you can't help but root for Paul after hearing how upbeat he's been able to stay despite this horrific accident. He's the true definition of a fighter -- even if he never gets back in the ring.

What words of encouragement would you offer to Paul?
