Get Panicky Without Your Phone? You May Have a 'Disorder'

Cell phoneThere are a lot of things I'm afraid of. You know, normal things. I'm slightly afraid of heights, of being far away from family when something bad happens, of winding up alone (eeek) ... that sort of stuff. But what if I told you there's a whole class of people who are AFRAID of being separated from their cellphones? AFRAID! And get this, there's a NAME for the disorder: Nomophobia.

But just you wait, there's more. In a recent 1,000-person study done in the UK, 66 percent of people reported being afraid of being separated from their phone. SIXTY-SIX PERCENT. More. Than. Half.

... that's it. I need to buy a book, a pen, and paper, STAT.


It's scary to hear stats like that, isn't it? Whatever happened to the average day without technology? You know, a typical weekend. Remember what Sundays used to be like? You'd wake up, ideally someone would be making pancakes, and you'd sit around the kitchen table reading the paper without a care in the world. You weren't concerned about checking your Twitter page, seeing who just friended you on Facebook, or what your friends are posting on Instagram. You were concerned about being present, in the moment, with your family.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a techy lady. I love my iPad and my iPhone just as much as I like breathing. However, studies like this remind me how important it is to just sit back, take a load off, and put the cellphone down. The last thing I want is to enter a rehab program. Don't worry, I'm sure those will exist soon, too.
