Christian Coach Says He'd Be 'Honored' to Be Fired for Anti-Gay Beliefs (VIDEO)

No matter how far we've come on accepting diversity, sometimes it takes just one person to realize how much work we have left to do. University of Nebraska Cornhuskers assistant coach Ron Brown has gotten a lot of grief for publicly making anti-gay comments. Regardless of the backlash, he says he'll continue to do so.

Back in March, he testified against an Omaha anti-discrimination ordinance that would allow protection for gay and transgender people. He challenged the ordinance by saying that the Bible doesn't support homosexuality. And of course the whole speech was caught on tape, which you can see below.

His comments bring up so many issues, like how terrible it is when people use religion as an excuse to discriminate others, and ... what is gonna happen if a player comes out as gay on the Nebraska Cornhuskers team?

Check out the footage of him from the Oklahoma City Council:

It really makes me cringe when he brings up references to Christianity: "The question I have for you all is, like Pontius Pilate, what are you going to do with Jesus?" Brown asked. "Ultimately, if you don't have a relationship with him, and you don't really have a Bible-believing mentality, really, anything goes ... At the end of the day it matters what God thinks most."

Even though Brown has been an assistant coach since 1987, it seems that his comments have finally struck enough of a nerve for people to pay attention. It's truly infuriating when people use their religion as an excuse to discriminate or hate others. But Brown doesn't seem to mind and thinks it makes him some kind of martyr. He told the Associated Press: "To be fired for my faith would be a greater honor than to be fired because we didn't win enough games." Whaaaaaaat?

He also went on to say that homosexuals do not deserve the same protections as other groups that historically have been discriminated against, such as blacks and women. Like I said, Whaaaaaat? How can you be all for the acceptance of one group and not the other?

Plus, how could any player come out on the Nebraska football team with a coach like this? It's truly a shame that a person who is molding young people at a collegiate level is using the Bible as an excuse to keep discriminating against homosexuals. As an African American man, you'd think he'd know what it's like to be discriminated against. Hopefully the college can fulfill this guy's quest for "honor" and get rid of him as fast as they can. I'm sure there are far more deserving assistant coaches out there!

What do you think of Ron Brown's remarks? Should he be fired, or is he protected with freedom of speech?
