It’s Jackie Robinson Day: 5 Quotes to Honor His Amazing Legacy On & Off the Field

Jackie RobinsonJackie Robinson was a pioneer in breaking the color barrier in baseball. Today marks the 65th anniversary of him taking to the field in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform as the first  African American allowed to play in the Major League since baseball had been segregated in 1889.

The impact he had on the sport of baseball and on racial issues in America was indelible, and around the country today he's being lauded for his contributions. As the mom of a Little League player, he is one of the greats from whom I want my young son to learn and see just how incredibly rich this game can be, and how he used his position on the field to do so many great things off of it as well.

In honor of his many accomplishments and the strength, courage, and talent he shared over the years, here are five great quotes from Jackie Robinson from which we can all still learn:

1. "Life is not a spectator sport. If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life."

2. "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

3. "There's not an American in this country free until every one of us is free."

4. "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me... all I ask is that you respect me as a human being."

5. The right of every American to first-class citizenship is the most important issue of our time.

Still, while we celebrate the legend of Jackie Robinson, we also must acknowledge that there is much more to be done when it comes to racial equality in this country. We need to not only recognize the work he did, but continue to do it as well to truly honor him.

Which baseball greats have you introduced to your kids?
