Obama Birth Certificate on Facebook Mocks All the Doubters

obama birth certificate mugHere we go again! Maricopa County Sheriff from Arizona Joe Arpaio is up to his usual antics, but this time he's not posting online mug shots of people who are arrested, asking viewers to vote for the photo they find most amusing. Instead, he's pullin' out the old, racist, Tea Party-beloved "concern" about Obama's birth certificate. According to "America's Toughest Sheriff," the long-form version of the certificate might be forged. Yuuuuup, they're STILL harping on this.

But this resurrection of crazy talk means there couldn't be a better moment, it seems, for Obama's 2012 campaign staff to convert 44's Facebook page to the Timeline format. Hello, instant e-biography! Not convinced that the POTUS is an American just like you and me? All you have to do is scroll down to August 3, 1961.

That's the date Obama was born ... in Honolulu, Hawaii, which you may know as an American city and state. The campaign's poking fun at the Birthers on the Timeline, posting a photo of the "Made in the U.S.A." mug, which features the long-form birth certificate. (A description for the mug in the Obama 2012 store reads, "There's really no way to make the birth certificate conspiracy completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it -- and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke.") Well, they've got a much better attitude about something completely ludicrous than I would have if I were him!

As for the rest of the Timeline, you can check out a slew of notable moments in Barry's pre-presidential life, like 1971 when he moved in with his grandparents in Hawaii, or 1978 when he started his first job ... scooping treats at Baskin-Robbins! 1983 was the year he graduated from Columbia University, where he majored in political science with a speciality in international relations. They mark the summer he met future wife Michelle Robinson while working as an associate at a Chicago law firm. And on and on.

As impressive as it is, it also reads like anyone else's Timeline, don't you think? People complain that the President shouldn't be "wasting time" updating Facebook, tweeting, pinning on Pinterest, posting photos on Instagram (newsflash: it's his campaign staff doing most of the updating), but it's clear that social networking is a tool political candidates can and should be using to share their personal histories. He's the leader of the free world, but we still want to know that he's "just like us" on some level. Looks like there's no better way to make that clear as day than on a Facebook Timeline! Thanks, Zuck!

What do you think about Obama's new Timeline?
