Venus Williams' Latest Wardrobe Malfunction Shows She's No Designer

venus williamsWhoops! Oh, Venus Williams. If anyone could conceive of a fashionable AND functional tennis dress, you'd think it would be the seasoned pro athlete/designer. Not so much, if Williams' potentially very revealing wardrobe malfunction during her match against Flavia Pennetta in Milan is any indication.

Williams was playing her usual super-energetic, throwing-herself-into-every-serve sort of game when the left strap on her dress snapped, nearly resulting in a very Janet Jackson-esque moment.

The funny thing is, she was wearing a dress from her own line of tennis clothing, eleVen. Either somebody in production needs to be fired or Williams isn't sufficiently test driving these outfits.

I'd expect Williams to have every possible glitch covered. In fact, I'd assume that years of frustration with ill-fitting/performing tennis dresses were part of the reason Williams decided to design her own line. That's kind of the most logical explanation for the athlete-to-designer progression.

Then again, a quick look back at Venus Williams' fashion history proves practicality isn't tops on this tennis diva's list. Who can forget the booty-baring corset dress from the 2010 French Open or the gold shorts-accented white jumpsuit from Wimbledon 2011? Still, I never thought a fiercely competitive player like Williams would ever let her look get in the way of her game.

So maybe this was a production error after all, rather than a design fail. Either way, I still believe Williams is a far better athlete than she is a designer. I can't stop imagining how Tim Gunn might have reacted, were he watching the game: "Make it work!"
