It's Time for Tim Tebow to Leave Faith Off the Field

guy in a tim tebow jerseyThe Great Tim Tebow Debate of 2011 rages on, and turns out I'm not alone in feeling the guy should try keeping his extreme excitement about faith to himself. Former Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer remarked yesterday on a Phoenix sports radio station on how his successor's a "winner," but he also thinks maybe Tebow could stand to reel in the copious displays of religion a bit.

He explained, "When he accepts the fact that we know that he loves Jesus Christ, then I think I'll like him a little better. I don't hate him because of that, I just would rather not have to hear that every single time he takes a good snap or makes a good handoff."

YES, exactly!! But oh no ... Tebow won't take Plummer's warring words lying down!

He made his rebuttal today, likening his fanaticism for religion to the same way people don't just say "I love you" to their wives on their wedding day. In other words, any time he gets the "opportunity to tell [Jesus] that he loves him" or is "given an opportunity to shout him out on national TV," he's going to do it UP! Argghhh.

The point here is that those of us who are rolling our eyes at "Tebowing" and Tebow's omnipresent show of faith don't necessarily HATE him. We just think his constant worshipping out there on the field -- or whenever there's a camera on him -- is enough already. We get it, Tim! You're religious, and that's great! I'm sure many football fans are super-supportive of it, and some even feel the same way. But his shtick is overkill.

What's more, Tebow's super-public worship actually cheapens his faith in a way. To me, spirituality is so individualized and personal, it seems like you'd want to honor it with a certain level of intimacy. And yes, even worshipping in a church or synagogue or mosque is more intimate than doing it in front of millions of Monday Night Football viewers.

No matter, though. Tebow's gonna just keep on doing his thing, but I guess that means those of us who are fed up have to just keep tuning out his shout-outs.

Do you agree with Jake Plummer or should Tebow keep it up?
