5 Reasons You Should Totally Be Checking Facebook at Work

facebook at workWhere are you right now? If I were a betting woman, I'd guess that you were at work. I mean, that's where most people do the majority of their Internet surfing, right? Twitter, Facebook, The Stir. It all typically happens between the hours of 9 and 5, correct? And with good reason, it makes you a better worker.

A recent study found that people who have access to social media websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, have a higher rate of job satisfaction than those who don't. And, like, duh. Our attention spans are only so long. Of course, we're going to be happier at our jobby jobs if we can take little breaky breaks.

So, to all you companies out there who don't allow your employees to peruse some Mark Zuckerberg goodness while at work, this one's for you. Here are 5 reasons employees should use Facebook and Twitter at work.

Employees need breaks. And not just lunch ones. I once heard (and just Googled) that the adult sustained attention span (the attention span required to produce results) caps out at about 20 minutes. Twenty minutes! See, workers need a little bit of a reprive from all those TPS reports in order to be productive.

It fosters relationships. Are you Facebook friends with the majority of your employees? I sure am. And, you know, I feel that I know them a little bit better because of it. For instance, I would have had no idea that Carol from Accounting was into crocheting if it weren't for Facebook. And now we're closer because of it.

Networking. Oh, I just met this guy at a bar the other night and guess what? He works at that fantastic PR company we've been trying to hook up with. If I could check my Facebook at work, I'd be able to let everyone know that their company happy hour is tonight. Around the corner.

Spying. Oh, I just met this guy at a bar the other night and guess what? He works at that dreadful competing company we hate. If I could check my Facebook at work, I'd be able to let everyone know that his company is working on the exact same project as us. Right now.

It's fun. Come on, you think your employees are going to go looking elsewhere if they're allowed to have fun at work? I think not.

Do you check Facebook at work?
