Race Car Drivers Team Up to Support the Real Heroes (VIDEO)

jeff gordonAsk a little kid who his heroes are and he'll most likely rattle off a list of rich and famous athletes. Sadly, a lot of these MVPs act like they deserve the hero worship. So it's inspiring to see a down-to-earth, respectful network like the car racing community in action.

From IndyCar Racing's moving response to the recent, tragic loss of Dan Wheldon to NASCAR's involvement in First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden's "Joining Forces" initiative to support military families, these star athletes continue to prove their priorities are firmly in place.

A series of PSAs featuring pro racers like Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne, "Joining Forces" will play in hundreds of Walmart locations across the country.

Essentially, if you're a Walmart shopper, this means you should prepare to get teary-eyed the next time you run out for paper towels and AA batteries.

There's just something so humble and endearing about the way Gordon, Kahne, Carl Edwards, and others recite the following lines from a poem by U.S. Marine wife Elizabeth S. Schwarzer:

I never wore the uniform/No medals on my chest

The band, it doesn't play for me/I am not among the best

It's clear these guys really mean what they're saying: We're not heroes, the guys fighting for your freedom are the real heroes.

I stand among the silent ranks/Our devotion absolute

Watch this video and tell me you don't get at least a little lump in your throat!
