Google's 'Gumby' Doodle Rocks, Darnit! (VIDEOS)

gumby google doodleHow adorable is Gumby? No -- really. Scale of 1 to 10? I'd probably say at least an 11, no? Turning on my computer this morning and seeing Gumby, Pokey, and the whole gang on the Google homepage made me instantaneously happier. Today's Google Doodle, which celebrates what would have been the 90th birthday of the late Art Clokey, Gumby creator and pioneer in clay-animation, is classic. And you know the best part? It's interactive! Just playing around with this thing (read: I'm hard at work) makes me feel super nostalgic.

The doodle is so bouncy and fun, don't you think? And the theme song makes me too reminiscent for words! Even though the singing is pretty much wretched and horribly off-key. When Clokey came up with Gumby -- he paved the way for so many other excellent claymation cartoons, including one of my all-time faves Wallace & Gromit. So I say what the hey -- with a legacy like his, who needs a good theme song anyway?

I have to ask: Am I the only person who sorta kinda wanted to eat Gumby? He slightly reminds me of a marshmallow, more specifically an Easter Peep. I bet he'd taste great with some sprinkles drizzled in caramel.

Got to admit though, it's pretty hard to even utter Gumby's name without mentioning Eddie Murphy. If you ask me, the comedian is solely responsibly for carrying Gumby's legacy through to the 20th century with his hilarious "I'm Gumby, Dammit" skits on Saturday Night Live from the '80s.

In honor of Clokey's birthday, today's Google Doodle, and all of us Gumby-heads everywhere -- let's have a laugh at Murphy's expense. Watch him in this classic SNL skit where he takes on the uber-lovable marshmallow claymation star:

Were you a Gumby fan?
