Racist Fan Throws Banana Peel at Black Hockey Player

banana peelWayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers is one of the National Hockey League's few African-American players. And you'd think, in this day and age, nobody would bat an eyelash, seeing him -- or any other African-American -- on the ice. You'd think. But you'd be wrong. Apparently, mean, ugly racism is alive and well in the sport. Who knew?

Thursday, at the Labatt Centre in Ontario, during his shootout attempt in Philadelphia's 4-3 loss to Detroit, a fan -- wait for it -- threw a banana peel at him. A banana peel.

Simmonds admitted that the banana peel, which landed directly in his path to the net, rattled him. But he said, "You learn to deal with it." He continued, "When you're a black man playing in a predominantly white man's sport, you've got to come to expect things like that."

You do? I mean, I may be a bit naive here, but what the f**k? Is this sort of thing a regular-ish occurrence for Simmonds and other black players? If it is ... I'm ... speechless. I thought we were living in the year 2011, where everybody knows this type of ignorant behavior is totally unacceptable!

Unfortunately, though -- and shockingly -- this actually isn't the first time a "banana peel incident" has happened in the NHL. In 2002, someone did the same thing to Carolina Hurricanes goalie Kevin Weekes.

I really don't get it. Not even a little. Why would somebody do something so rude and hurtful to a person just trying to play a game? Oh, I know. Because they're an ignorant, uneducated, terrible buffoon of a person!

How rude is this?
