Only PETA Could Make Porn Unsexy

PETA veggie sexPorn is big biz for the Internet. That must be why, in a world previously dominated by dot-com, .xxx is coming to town. In response to the launch of the new domain, tons of big companies are trying to prevent their brand's name from being co-opted by adult entertainment, but PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) seems to be running after, instead of away from, the chance to be associated with smut. They've bought and plan to actually offer porn on the site.

Of course there's a hitch: In addition to graphic nudity, those surfing the site will also see graphic images of animals. The aim is to draw attention to the "plight of animals" and promote veganism. Yep, cuz that's a message most people want to think about while they're attempting to get off.

Silly PETA!

Still, I guess we shouldn't be all that surprised, given that the nonprofit has been flirting with porn for some time now through ad campaigns featuring nude celebs and sex with veggies. But I feel like a full-on porn SITE is a whole different ballgame.

PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said:

We learn the racy things we do are sometimes the most effective way that we can reach particular individuals. We really want to grab people's attention, get them talking and to question the status quo and ultimately take action, because the best way we can help the greatest number of animals is simply by not eating them.

Sigh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've heard it all before. Porn is the oldest trick in the Internet promo book. It's the cheapest, lowest common denominator way to get publicity. If PETA really wanted to get us talking and thinking using technology, they could try something totally fresh and innovative -- like taking to Twitter with some kind of really cool, attention-getting trending tweet campaign. Or coming up with a series of viral videos featuring vegan celebs. Or a contest or game people could play on Facebook. An app with lots of cool vegan recipes? I don't know. I just don't think many people -- aside from maybe those who already support the vegan cause -- are going to visit a PETA-themed porn site. (I mean, really, what's it going to be like? You're getting all hot and bothered watching a sexy vegan couple's soy whipped cream foreplay ... then, as you click away, you see a chicken beheaded? Ugh!)

If anything, it'll just be a funny novelty for two seconds. Not exactly something to take seriously. And given how important I do think their message is ... that's definitely a shame.

What do you think about PETA having their own porn site?
