Wendi Deng Saved Her Man From More Than Just a Pie

wendi deng pieThanks to the Internet and, of course, his wife, Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch has finally achieved what he has sought ever since news of the British phone hacking scandal broke earlier this month: an image boost.

By now, the video showing Deng lunging at a protester who attacked her husband with a shaving cream pie has gone viral. People all over the world -- even those who strongly dislike Murdoch -- admit to feeling some sympathy for the media mogul after seeing Deng leap to protect him. And, Deng herself is being hailed as a heroine.

It just goes to show how the Internet -- plus, one very feisty woman -- can be a powerful game-changer even in a situation as notorious as Murdoch's.

So how did Deng become an overnight Internet sensation?

After she came to his aid during the Parliamentary inquiry into the scandal Tuesday, the video became an instant hit. Immediately, Twitter went crazy with praise for Deng. Even news anchor Katie Couric got in on the action, tweeting:

Wow, wendy [sic] murdoch giving whole new meaning to the term tiger mother … insanity!

The general consensus among the tweets, of course, was that Deng transformed an otherwise boring hearing into terrific TV. The irony, of course, is that the protester was likely banking on the Internet to further his own agenda of humiliating the "greedy" media executive: Consider how viral images of Murdoch covered in foam would have been an embarrassing PR disaster for his team.

But Deng intercepted in the nick of time. She not only saved her man from a pie and utter humiliation, she provided a distraction (at least for now) from the worst crisis of his career. And thanks to the power of the Internet, we didn't have to miss out on one of the most memorable moments in the investigation.

Do you think Wendi Deng is a hero?
