Veteran Golfer Tom Watson Brings Sexy Back To British Open

tom watsonIf you haven't heard of Tom Watson, you've done a remarkable job of shielding yourself from any golf-related news over the past 35 years. The 61-year-old pro golfer has been hitting the links since the 70s, winning tournament after tournament with talent and grace. This weekend Watson is playing in the British Open Championship at Royal St. George's and though he's getting up there in age, he's doing more than just hanging in there. After completing the third round today with a 72, Watson will enter the final round tomorrow on a hot streak -- he climbed back for 45th place on Friday to 27th at the end of Saturday.

It's so much more interesting to watch a vet like Watson navigate a soggy British Open than a newbie like Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy. I think I may have a thing for older men in baseball hats playing golf in the rain.

Watson has won five previous British Opens in 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, and 1983 -- I think he's due another victory here in 2011. The gross rain and wind that's pummeling the golfers doesn't effect Tom -- he's seen it all before. Watson is like the mailman when it comes to consistent delivery: Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night will keep Watson from doing his job. And he's got some tips for the youngsters:

One of the things you learn is the old saying, 'swing with ease in the breeze.' You see the young kids trying to hit the ball really hard in the wind. You don't need to do that. I mean, I'm 61 years old so I can't swing hard anyway.

Watson sunk a hole in one on a par three in the second round, so maybe the little ones should start listening. Granted, Watson's got a long way to go to get the victory tomorrow ... he's likely going to start tomorrow's round about eight or nine shots behind the leader. But hey, anything is possible.

I'll be cheering for Watson because I love an underdog, I love a seasoned vet kicking it with the pups, and I love his weathered face of determination and experience. He says he's looking forward to Sunday's round, regardless of the weather -- but at his age, I suppose it's all elementary to my dear Watson.

Are you watching the British Open? Who do you like?
