'Macho Man' Randy Savage's Death Brings Heartless Twitter Jokes

His real name was Randy Mario Poffo, but you probably knew him better as Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Savage was a 58-year-old professional wrestler famous for his raspy voice, the sunglasses and bandanas he wore in the ring, and his signature phrase: "Ohhhhh yeah!"

He was a dedicated performer who won two WWF titles after he arrived on the wrestling scene in 1985. According to WWE's website, Savage was the No. 1 champion of all time.

This morning at around 9:25 AM, Savage had a heart attack while driving his Jeep Wrangler in Seminole, Florida. The Jeep veered over the raised concrete median divider, crossed over the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a tree. He did not survive.

As soon as the news of the accident hit Twitter, he became a trending topic. While plenty of fans expressed their sorrow over his passing, a seemingly equal number of people naturally figured his death made a great opportunity to hone their amateur-hour comedy skills.

Unfortunately for Savage, he had the bad timing to die right in the midst of a bunch of chatter about the upcoming "end of the world." So, never mind anything he accomplished in his life, or the fact that he just celebrated his first wedding anniversary with his wife Lynn, or the family and friends who are mourning his loss -- let's make some rapture jokes!

Here's a sampling of the Rapture-and-Slim-Jim comments that have been showing up on Twitter:

I guess God needed "Macho Man" Randy Savage up in Heaven to help with the stocking of some Slim Jim's for tomorrow's so called "rapture".

Is Macho Man Randy Savage considered the first victim of the Rapture? #justathought Too soon?

And with the first overall pick of the Rapture Draft, God selects.... Randy "MACHO MAN" Savage. Oooohhhhhh Yeaaaaaahhhhhh!

In an epic upset, Macho Man Randy Savage chosen as the first #rapture Beta tester

From today on, "snap into a Slim Jim" is slang for "wrap your car around a tree"

Ohhhhhh Yeaaaahhhh!!!! Time to brush up for my Slim Jim audition.

Keep it classy, folks. Nice to verify that our overwhelming desire to entertain people via social media often completely eclipses our sense of human decency.

While people like to make fun of pro wrestlers, by and large these were the folks who actually took the time to say something nice about Savage today. From some of his fellow WWE stars:

He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he's happy and in a better place and we miss him—Hulk Hogan

RIP Randy 'Macho Man' Savage - you were one of my childhood inspirations and heros. Strength, love and prayers to the Savage/Poffo family—Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

I lost a close friend today. If anybody in heaven is wondering who the cat in the ugly cowboy hat is it's Randy. Love you Bro. Never another—Kevin Nash

Every time I saw a retweeted Savage joke today it made me cringe. No matter if you were a fan or not, I think a life taken so suddenly deserves a little more respect than being reduced to a stupid one-liner.

RIP, Macho Man.
