Brandon Davies' Girlfriend Didn't Get Him Kicked Off BYU Team

Brandon DaviesBrandon Davies sounds like a regular college guy. He's got a little girlfriend trouble right now. It happens, right? But Brandon Davies, the sophomore who got kicked off the BYU men's basketball team for an honor code violation, is his own worst enemy.

The 19-year-old signed up for a basketball scholarship at Brigham Young University, a school named for one of the greats in the Church of Latter-day Saints. And then he went out and had pre-marital sex right before March Madness. (Rumors claim the girlfriend is now pregnant, but that part seems to be a hoax.)

Hellooooo? Did he leave his brain in the locker room when he went to buy the condoms? Because he attends classes and play basketball at one of the most famous religious schools in the country, and he just had pre-marital sex. Not seeing anything wrong here? Really?

People are trying to give Davies a break today, asking if he really "understood" the honor code or if he knew what it said, saying it's not fair to expect students to adhere to those standards. Maybe not, but kids have options when it comes to college. They read up on a school, and if they don't like it, they don't attend.

Davies chose to attend a school where the honor code is famous. No, infamous. I am not Mormon. I'm not a BYU fan (go Hokies!). But even I knew they're hardcore out there in the land of Jell-O and salty lakes. They can't curse! They can't drink soda! They can't have fun (OK, that was my addition)!

So I knew all this already. How could Davies know it? Well, last I checked, Davies is a 19-year-old college sophomore. They know how to use computers, even the dumb ones. Which is fortunate because the honor code has its own webpage. Let's take a look-see, at what students are expected to do, shall we?

Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

Hmm, a chaste and virtuous life. Big words. And Davies is an athlete. I try not to buy into the dumb jock concept, but for the sake of argument, we can stereotype him a little bit here and pretend that he has no way of knowing what that means. Only there's this thing called Clears it up pretty quickly. Chaste = no sex.

Brandon Davies doesn't really have a girlfriend problem today. He has a problem following rules. His girlfriend didn't get him kicked off the BYU team. He did.

What do you think? Are the rules fair? Should Davies get a pass?
