'Today Show' Didn't Know What 'Internet' Was in 1994 (VIDEO)

today show 1994I invite you, friends, to jump in this time-machine here and take a little trip with me back to a simpler time. A time when phones stayed in homes and offices, when the "@" symbol was only used for accounting short-hand, and when poofy bangs were all the rage. A time when, most importantly, "Internet" wasn't yet a word you, or your morning talk show hosts, knew anything about.

Friends, let's travel back to January 1994 and stop at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, Studio 1A. Let's watch the Today Show with Katie Couric, Bryant Gumbel, and some skinny brunette, and marvel at how far we've come. What's the topic, you ask. Oh, nothing really.

Just, the, what's that word? Oh yeah, Internet.

Watch as the hosts try to casually wrap their minds around "email" and the "world wide web." It's possibly the most interesting video clip you'll ever, ever see.

After you've watched and, let's be honest, watched again, here are some talking points and/or awesome things I'd like to point out.

  1. Gumbel: "That little mark, with the 'a,' and then the ring around it? ... I'd never heard it said! I'd only seen the mark."
  2. Gumbel: "What is 'Internet' anyway?" Couric: "It's that massive computer network, the one that's becoming really big now." Gumbel: "What, do you write to it, like mail?"
  3. I would be remiss in not mentioning Gumbel's flagrant hostility. Chill out, brosif -- inside of 10 years you'll be completely reliant on that "@" symbol.
  4. What will we be laughing at in 2027? How we, in 2011, didn't understand "universal health-care" or "solar power" or "gas-less cars"?

I've got to hear what you think of this clip. Absolutely mind-boggling, isn't it? Tell me your thoughts.
