Verizon iPhone Lovefest Hits Twitter & Facebook

All hail the Verizon iPhone! The Verizon announcement came this morning during their press conference. They are going to be the second carrier to offer the iPhone and most iPhone users (and forced BlackBerry and Droid users) tremble in anticipation.

For many of us with an iPhone, the last four years have been painfully difficult in terms of dropped calls and insane bills. We have downloaded apps gleefully and checked our email constantly. We have worn calluses on our texting thumbs, gliding them over the smooth screen to get to our Pandora stations and iPod music. In short, we love our iPhones. But all good things must come with baggage and that baggage has been AT&T.

All that may now change. Dear AT&T: Say hello to your competition. It's about to get heated up in here. Here is what users on Facebook and Twitter had to say about the changes:

On Facebook:

"Verizon has the best network, hands down. Everyone knows to avoid AT&T like the plague. Have had Verizon since 1998 and never dropped a call or had a problem."

"AT&T is overloaded. But VZ doesn't let you talk and data/web at the same time. That's a deal-breaker for me."

"We have Verizon Wireless and we love it. We have a family plan for $120/month, not many minutes (maybe 700 between us?) but unlimited texting and it's perfect for us. Switched from AT&T."

Twitter was also aflutter (I have always wanted to say that!) with the news:

"Now that there is #VZW iPhone, I hope Verizon's service remains good! Def don't want an #ATT repeat."

"Happy that Verizon is selling the iPhone, but I will likely wait until this summer to see the new model before jumping to VZW."

"@PapaSmurf2009 VZW getting the iPhone is going to help the entire mobile industry and take Apple to new heights."

Suffice it to say, people are psyched. And I am one of them. We are a two iPhone family and could not live without them, but we also hate AT&T. This could be good. Maybe we can kiss $180 phone bills and dropped calls goodbye.

According to the Miami Herald, the new phone goes on sale February 10 at Verizon and Apple stores and Verizon customers can pre-order as of February 3. Here is more information:

  • Same prices as AT&T's iPhone 4: $199 for the 16 GB and $299 for 32 GB of storage.
  • Unlike AT&T's version, Verizon iPhone 4 users will not be able to talk and surf the web at the same time. That's going to be a huge setback to getting customers to switch from AT&T.
  • It's not using Verizon's new 4G network.
  • You can make it a 3G mobile hotspot to share Internet connection with up to 5 other devices.
  • Verizon didn't reveal what data plan prices would be for the iPhone. Currently, Verizon sells an unlimited data plan for smartphones for $30, but is not saying if that will be available for the iPhone 4. (AT&T no longer offers an unlimited data plan.)

Whoo-hoo! This is big news. Possibly as big as the day the iPhone was released. Buh-bye AT&T, your reign has ended.

Are you happy about the news?
