Me and hubs about to embark on our "less meat" journey,
I don't ordinarily make New Year's Resolutions, but this year, I'm making an exception. Mr. Cafe Kim and I have decided to eat less meat in 2010, and I can't WAIT to see how it all plays out.
Are you making any New Year's Resolutions?
We've been considering a diet with less meat for some time now, primarily because of health reasons—Mr. Cafe Kim has high cholesterol and has been trying to cut down on red meat—and financial reasons—meat costs a lot!
Recently, we both read the book Eating Animals, in which the author, by Jonathan Safran Foer, writes about how he became a vegetarian when his son was born. And while Mr. Cafe Kim and I, at least at this point, do not intend to be vegetarians, Foer's ethical arguments about why factory farming may be bad for people, for animals, and for the environment pushed us over the edge in terms of paying more attention to what we are eating.
For us, eating less meat is definitely going to be a lifestyle switch. Before, meal planning involved deciding which side dishes to serve that would supplement, say, chicken breasts, burgers, a roast. But now we have to rethink our menu in terms of how to get the nutrients we need without making meat the focus of every meal.
In 2010, I'll be blogging about our efforts to eat less meat, and include the vegetable-focused menus and recipes we'll be consuming along the way. (And I'm sure there will be a post in the near future about how bad I'm craving a steak and can't have one, so look forward to that!)
I know that eating healthy is a New Year's Resolution for many, many moms...is it yours? How are you planning to do it?
