DIY Holiday Gifts: Pretty Layered Mixes in a Jar

holiday gifts guide

Cozycabinmom's favorite food gift items to give are layered mixes in a jar. Look how pretty they are! There are so many mixes to choose from: cookies, cobblers, muffins, etc. Here, she shows us how to make Layered Bean Soup Mix in a Jar, a perfect gift during the cold winter months.

Layered Dried Bean Soup Mix in a Jar by Cozycabinmom

Dried Bean Mix:

1/2 cup kidney beans

1/2 cup split yellow peas

1/2 cup black beans

1/2 cup red lentils

1/2 cup small red beans

1/2 cup split green peas

Layer each type of bean in a 24-ounce clear gift jar.

Seasoning Mix:

1 tablespoon dried sweet pepper flakes

2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules

2 teaspoons dried minced onion

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon celery seed

4 tablespoons brown sugar

Combine ingredients. Store in a resealable plastic bag. Attach to jar along with a cute decorative recipe card with these instructions:

Seasoned Bean Soup:

Dried Bean Mix

2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans tomatoes

Seasoning Mix

1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke (optional)

Rinse beans and place in large Dutch oven or stock pot. Pour 4 cups boiling water over beans; cover and let soak overnight. Drain beans and return to stock pot. Add 6 cups water, cover, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 1 to 1/2 hours or until beans are almost tender. Add tomatoes and seasoning mix. Stirring occasionally, cover and simmer 30 minutes. Uncover beans and continue to simmer about 1 hour longer or until beans are tender and soup thickens. Serve warm. Yields about 10 cups soup.

Cozycabinmom also gives a matching, smaller jar with cornbread mix (recipe below) and a miniature bottle of Tabasco sauce. Love it!

Cornbread Mix

3 cups sifted flour

3 cups yellow cornmeal

1 1/2 cups instant nonfat dry milk

3 1/2 tablespoons baking powder

2 1/2 teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons sugar (optional)

Include a decorative tag with instructions for making the cornbread:

Combine 2 1/2 cup of the cornbread mix with: 3/4 cup solid vegetable shortening; 3 eggs, lightly beaten; and 1 cup water. Preheat the oven to 425. Place dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cut the shortening into the dry mix until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add eggs and water and mix well. Bake in an 8" x 8" x 2" greased pan for 150-20 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
