My husband and I took our 6 year old and 4 year old trick or treating in a friend's city neighborhood, where you knock on brownstone after brownstone, so needless to say, they cleaned up. We could have used a crane to load the plastic jack-o-lantern baskets into the car.
Today, however, their stashes are mysteriously ... lighter. Hmm. Wonder how that happened? Truth be told the garbage man will notice the trash bags are considerably heavier at pickup this week. Yes, I'm one of those moms that tosses candy. Out of sight, out of mind, for me as well as my already hyper kids.
But not all moms are candy tossing fanatics like me.
Hope you had a super sweet Halloween!

I'm a sugar junkie, so I never turn down free candy.
I picked other because, I do throw some candy away but only if it is not wrapped good. All open candy goes in the trash, because It could be poisened. Loosely wraped lolipops, loose candy with twist on wrappers the bubble gum. Unless it is sealed its trash.
I wont throw any candy away just because they don't like it. I will eat it. This year my oldest didn't go trick or treating so she got almost half of the little ones candy. I will help eat any candy they want to share with me. We have to brush our teeth and can not have any candy after six and must eat all meals.
If they get too hyper no more candy. Limit how many pieces they can have or take it away for a while. But never throw it away.
It is only once a year and so much fun. Don't be a party pooper
That's a little mean don't ya think?? To each there own!
I think it's so silly to throw the candy. I do pitch anything that looks open, like Dreaming87 said.
Otherwise, we split it into three piles. One for my three year old (suckers, chocolate bars with no peanuts), one for me (hard candy, chocolate bars with nuts) and one for my husband/ friend's husband (candy that travels well). Hubby is out to sea, so now I'll have a stash for when we have mail drops. My friend is visiting family, so I'm doing her hubby's mail drops too.
Grace's candy will mostly be potty rewards. It saves me money because I don't have to buy treats for going potty. I'll probably throw one or two in my purse for bribes at the grocery store. She'll end up eating two or three little candies a day (if that) and her bag of candy will last a LONG time.
It just seems wasteful to throw it away.
I dont throw it out, but I do take out stuff I dont want them to have (off brand stuff.. weird stuff.. things they could choke on) and donate it to the local shelter.
Trash it. I'm amazed that places will even let you donate candy...how could that possibly be of any nutritional benefit to anyone?
If you go trick or treating, don't throw candy away. People didn't spend money so you could trash it. If you're not going to eat it, do OTHER Halloween activities, or stop trick or treating before you have "too much". How wasteful and frankly, rude. This is the first year I'd heard of moms doing this, and if it becomes more popular, I'll stop giving out candy. You could, you know, ration it out.
I only throw away questionable things - homemade stuff (if we don't know the person), or things with damaged wrappers.
I use it for my sons' goody bags for their Birthday party in two weeks.
Rana, I agree with you 100%
It makes me want to ask the parents if they're going to throw it away before I hand it out to their kid!
