Your Last Meal: What Would You Choose?

last meals famous last meals chef's last suppersThe last meal is a customary part of a prisoner's last day before receiving the death penalty (let's not get into a debate about that here), and there have certainly been some interesting choices. Here's what some death row prisoners have eaten and what some famous chefs say they'd eat for their last meal.


Timothy McVeigh: Two pints of chocolate chip ice cream.

Gary Gilmore: A hamburger, hard-boiled eggs, a baked potato, a few cups of coffee, and three shots of whiskey.

James Edward Smith: Was denied a lump of dirt; settled for a small cup of yogurt.

Dennis Wayne Bagwell: Medium rare steak with A1 Steak Sauce, fried chicken breasts and thighs, BBQ ribs, French fries, onion rings, bacon, scrambled eggs with onions, fried potatoes with onions, sliced tomatoes, salad with ranch dressing, two hamburgers, peach pie, milk, coffee, and iced tea with real sugar.

Dobie Gillis Williams: Twelve candy bars and some ice cream.


Here's what some famous chefs say they'd choose for their last supper on earth:

Mario Batali: "I would have eight or ten courses of magnificent seafood, pasta and vegetables (including raw radishes with good oil and salt). This would all be washed down with a sea of icy limoncello."

Jamie Oliver: "I would have a big pot of spaghetti all’arrabiata made with three types of chilies. It is soft, sweet and silky—my perfect comfort food. If I were going to have dessert, it would be homemade rice pudding with roasted peaches. The rice pudding would be served very cold and topped with the hot caramelized peaches."

Gordon Ramsay: "I would have a classic roast dinner—roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and red wine gravy."

Alain Ducasse: "I would begin with a caponata. I would then have roasted quails in a Madiran wine sauce.Then would come smooth celery root purée with nutmeg, whose delicate lightness would pair marvelously with these small birds. I would finish with melt-in-your mouth apple slices."

Daniel Boulud: "It would depend upon the season, and upon whatever Alain Ducasse would like to cook for me."

As someone who loves food, I'm not sure what I'd choose—probably my mom's spaghetti and meatballs (which sounds pretty boring after seeing what all those famous cooks had to say). One thing's for sure, I'd much rather have one of them make my last meal than a prison cook!
