I've tried to make my own taco seasoning for tacos, taco salad, and other Mexican dishes. But it rarely comes close to being as flavorful as the premixed taco spices that come in the little packets.
Still, I'm determined to mix my own so that I'm in control of how much sodium, heat, herbs, etc. go into it. I'm liking this recipe from This Week's Menu—she suggests making a big batch and using as needed...
Taco Seasoning From This Week's Menu
6 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper)
1 1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 tablespoon paprika
3 tablespoons cumin
2 tablespoons Kosher salt
2 tablespoons black pepper
Put all of the ingredients in an airtight jar or a container with a lid and shake. Use 2 tablespoons mix per pound of meat (or to taste).

Dude, that's a great idea, to make your own taco seasoning! It can get expensive buying the packets of taco seasoning instead! *writes down the recepie*
I would love to make my own, but I don't have a taste for spices, so I never knew what to put in it. I think I will make my own, just to cut down on the sodium. Thanks for the recipe!
make your own the store boughts crap and filled with chemicals
I make my own, it's a copycat recipe of Taco Bell taco seasoning: 2 Tbsp. flour, 2 tsp. chili powder, 1 1/2 tsp. dry minced onion, 1 tsp. paprika, 1 tsp. instant beef boullion granules, 3/4 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. garlic powder and 1/4 tsp. sugar. Mix all together and add to 1 lb. browned ground beef or turkey along with 3/4 c. water. I've been using this for years.
