Does Organic Food Taste Better?

by Kim Conte on July 13, 2009 at 7:00 AM

does organic taste betterIf I'm going to pay $1 more per pound for organic apples at the supermarket, then I expect them to taste better than the conventional ones, right?

Not necessarily...

To be honest, I don't know if I could—10 times out of 10—correctly differentiate between an organic apple slice and a conventionally grown apple slice in a blind taste-test.

I know that some people probably disagree with me and think that organic always tastes better. After all, taste is subjective. And, some non-organic products are developed namely to enhance appearance and extend shelf-life with flavor being low on the priority list.

I definitely accept that there is an obvious difference in flavor between some organic products and their conventionally grown versions. But apples? I don't think my taste-buds are that refined.

But superior taste isn't the No. 1 reason why people tend to buy organic. Rather, it's because they want to avoid pesticides and other chemicals that can harm the body and the environment.

When I can afford it, I choose organic products over conventional because I'm concerned about the health of my family and the health of the environment. But in terms of taste, here are some other factors to consider when choosing organic products:

  • Locality: In my experience, locally grown food tends to taste better because it's fresher and hasn't spent the last week being shipped cross-country.
  • Seasonality: A tomato in the summer is always going to taste better than a tomato in the dead of winter.

What do you think? Which organic foods do you think taste better than conventional?

Although taste isn't why we eat organic, now that we have been eating only organic food for so long I swear if I happen to eat something that isn't I can taste the chemicals and nasty stuff.  So I think it does taste better now.

I know that organic ketchup taste WAY better than the "other" stuff and so do organic or cage free eggs. I haven't tasted any difference in fruits or veggies, but maybe some can. We are more of a no HFCS house, than a strictly organic house. I buy what I have to to make sure there is no HFCS.

I love organic food and eat it whenever I can. But I did notice the different taste of organic ketchup vs. non-organic. I so hate to say this, but I thought organic ketchup tasted weird! I know it's only because I am used to non-organic, but it freaked me out. Still, I've switched to organic and don't want to go back.

I think many organic food do taste better, but nothing taste better than a fruit or vegetable right out of my garden (which is 98% organic).

I just wish organic was more affordable and easier to find in my area.

Just kind of an OT sidenote since I see the advertisement up there, Horizon milk is not really organic.  It's a scam.  If you're wanting organic milk, choose another brand.

I've found most organic tastes better.

I've also found organic fruits are softer and more prone to bruising.

I agree with a previous reply.  I had been buying regular old strawberries, then switched to organic, I thought those were great, then my neighbor brought over some garden grown strawberries!

I've found most organic foods tastes better. Milk, cheese, eggs, chicken, ketchup, veggies, fruits, etc.... it is all tastier than the non-organic brands. Plus I don't want my kids eating the hormones, pesticides or fertilizers that can be in or on the non-organic foods.

certain things you absolutely have to buy organic for health reasons meat, any thin skinned vegetable or fruit, milk etc. lots of things are a scam especially the nearly processed "organic" "all natural" foods.... always read the labels !!

I like to buy our fruits and veggies from a local organic farm, they taste way better than store bought!  And it's actually cheaper.
