Eliminating Tipping?

The New York Times recently reported that some restaurants are eliminating tips in favor of an 18 percent fixed service fee. The thinking behind this policy is that waiters would be more inclined to work together instead of compete for good tips thereby improving restaurant service overall.

As someone with questionable math skills, I can definitely see the draw of not having to count on my fingers to figure out the tip at the end of the meal. But I wonder if this type of policy ultimately hurts the servers.
