Pistachio Recall: Yet Another Salmonella Scare?


As I'm sure you've heard by now, pistachios and pistachio products (like ice cream, cake mixes, and nut bars) have been recalled over fears of possible salmonella contamination.

I'm shocked to hear about this so soon after the peanut butter salmonella scare from a couple months ago...


According to an article in The Washington Post, the Food and Drug Administration has NOT  "changed the safety measures required by peanut companies or instructed inspectors to test for bacteria" even though there have been four outbreaks of salmonella from peanut products in the last three years. And now there is a possibility that pistachios might be tainted with salmonella? This is enough to make me want to steer clear of nuts forever. Is anyone with me?

A couple weeks ago, we talked about the government banning fast food restaurants near schools; many of you disagreed with the ban and opposed increased government intervention in the food industry across the board. Do you feel the same with respect to FDA regulation of nut companies?

Should the federal government do a better job of inspecting our food and protecting us from dangerous food-related illnesses? Or is increased government intervention always a bad thing?
