Shamrock Shakes: Where the Heck Are They?
Every year around St. Patrick's Day, I get really excited about Shamrock Shakes. Yet every year it seems like less and less McDonald's locations are offering this seasonal, green-tinged dessert.
In fact, so many people are on the search for Mickey D's Shamrock Shake that there's even a Web site devoted to tracking this elusive beverage...
If you visit Find The Shamrock Shake!, you can see a (albeit haphazard) list of all the McDonald's locations where people have spotted the shake and the date they spotted it on. The site also lists locations that do not have the drink. And if you happen to eat at a McDonald's in your neighborhood, and they are offering the shake—then please, PLEASE, I'm begging you, add the location to the site or comment below because I'm desperate to stalk them!
Unfortunately for me, it looks like there aren't too many locations in the Chicago-area offering my beloved shake. Thankfully, Recipezaar.com has a copy-cat recipe:
Copy-Cat McDonald's Shamrock Shake Recipe:
2 cups vanilla ice cream
1 1/4 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon mint extract
8 drops green food coloring
Blend all ingredients on high until smooth. Enjoy!
Someone told me that you can make a Grasshopper by adding half a Shamrock Shake to half a Chocolate Shake. I think I'd best give that a try...just for "research" purposes.
I know Shamrock Shakes are an acquired taste for some. Do you love 'em? Or do you not get what all the fuss is about?

Loved them as a kid, mostly for the novelty appeal. I've tried making green shakes for my kids, though, and they won't touch 'em.

I love em! We're making them for a kids St. Patrick's day party for our local Cafemom playgroup.

I have to encourage all of you to make your own at home. If you had any idea the scary and extensive list of "ingredients" in those toxic green shakes you would think again. Homemade is always better.

I agree that while I love Shamrock Shakes with an undying passion, I am also hesitant to eat them because now I know what goes into them, Homemade is better if not just for the peace of mind. Also you can order any size you want and there is no snobby cashier to judge you!

We've got 'em in our area in Northern Michigan, but we prefer to make them at home. We've used that copycat recipe for a few years. I love Recipezaar!
