Shamrock Shakes: Where the Heck Are They?

Every year around St. Patrick's Day, I get really excited about Shamrock Shakes. Yet every year it seems like less and less McDonald's locations are offering this seasonal, green-tinged dessert.

In fact, so many people are on the search for Mickey D's Shamrock Shake that there's even a Web site devoted to tracking this elusive beverage...

If you visit Find The Shamrock Shake!, you can see a (albeit haphazard) list of all the McDonald's locations where people have spotted the shake and the date they spotted it on. The site also lists locations that do not have the drink. And if you happen to eat at a McDonald's in your neighborhood, and they are offering the shake—then please, PLEASE, I'm begging you, add the location to the site or comment below because I'm desperate to stalk them!

Unfortunately for me, it looks like there aren't too many locations in the Chicago-area offering my beloved shake. Thankfully, has a copy-cat recipe:

Copy-Cat McDonald's Shamrock Shake Recipe:

2 cups vanilla ice cream

1 1/4 cups milk

1/4 teaspoon mint extract

8 drops green food coloring

Blend all ingredients on high until smooth. Enjoy!

Someone told me that you can make a Grasshopper by adding half a Shamrock Shake to half a Chocolate Shake. I think I'd best give that a try...just for "research" purposes.

I know Shamrock Shakes are an acquired taste for some. Do you love 'em? Or do you not get what all the fuss is about?

They are here in Wisconsin...I just moved up here from NC a few months ago and this is the first time I had ever even heard of them.  I wanted to ask the cashier to mix like half chocolate with half mint, but I'm afraid they will think I'm nuts. laughing

To make the homemade version super yummy you could add some of the girl scout thin mints to your shake and that would be killer!  Or how about an oreo shamrock shake?  mmmmm....  I need to go get some more cheap buckets of ice cream!  lol.  I only buy the huge bucket at wal mart that is like $4 for the huge thing.

Every McD's in our area (central PA) has them.  I might have to have my hubby stop and get a gallon of ice cream tonight on his way home from work.  These sound yummmmyyyyyyyyyy..............

I also love Shamrock Shakes and associate them with my Birthday.  Our McDonalds always seems to be out of them.  I will have to try the recipe posted since it sounds pretty good.  Also - didn't think to ask for 1/2 chocolate 1/2 mint.  That sounds good too.  If my family enjoys Sham- Mock shake recipe - then I will add it to our traditional "Green luncheon on St. Pat's day"  We've always just added green milk to our green Mac N Cheese, green grapes.   A shake would make an AWESOME ending!
