You're Not Imagining Things: 'Festive Stress' Is Real

Every year it's the same thing. When Black Friday arrives, we swear by the old gods and the new that this is going to be the year we get our holiday sh*t together. Decorations will be up. Cookies will be baked. Presents will be bought and wrapped. 

And then before we know it, two weeks of getting nothing done passes, the middle of December arrives, and our stomachs are twisted up in knots.

The stress that you're feeling isn't just you. According to a study, 31 percent of Americans describe the holiday season as “frantic.”

According to the New York Post, a study commissioned by the US Highbush Blueberry Council in 2017 said holiday stress sets in around December 13. By the time December 18 rolls around, people switch from mild stress to severe stress. The stress peaks at around 2:05 p.m. on Christmas Day.

The biggest stressors include shopping (everything from what to get folks to the crazy crowds), cleaning, and cooking for the holiday.

Unsurprisingly, 41 Americans claim that they work "too hard" to capture Christmas magic, but it's moms at 49 percent who feel the most pressure.

And how do we cope? Why by holiday stress eating -- naturally.

Roughly 74 percent binge on unhealthy snacks during the holiday season, whereas 49 percent indulge in "too much" coffee. And unfortunately, 60 percent of those unhealthy eaters feel a ton of guilt about it. 

“The holiday season can be completely wonderful and magical -- but the hustle and bustle can be draining. Unfortunately, relying on caffeine and too many unhealthy treats ultimately creates an energy lull,” said Christy Brissette, spokesperson for the US Highbush Blueberry Council. “Taking a break and eating fresh fruit like blueberries, a good source of fiber and an excellent source of Vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant, provides an energy boost that leaves you feeling refreshed and empowered that you’re doing something healthy for yourself.”

Most folks also unwind by listening to music, watching a favorite show, or squeezing in a nap.
