It's a Snap: Ripen Your Rock-Hard Avocado in the Next Hour

Typically, when you hear tips on how to ripen avocados "quickly," you'll get awesome advice for getting perfectly ripe avocados in, like, three or four days. But sometimes, a girl's just gotta get her guac sooner than that, you know? Call us impatient (or just hungry), but days-long ripening processes just aren't going to cut it.


The good news is that there are ways to get guac sooner. The bad news is that as punishment for impatience, your avocado probably isn't going to taste quiiitttte as good as it would with a few days under its belt. It'll be close, but not exactly the same.

The trick is actually pretty easy -- all it involves is wrapping your hard avocado in tin foil and putting it in an oven preheated to 200 degrees. Then, you wait. Depending on how un-ripe your avocado is, you might need to leave it in there for up to an hour, but it could also be as quick as 10 minutes. Give it a squeeze every few minutes until it has a normal, ripe avocado softness to it.

Then, take it out of the oven and pop it in the fridge. It stays there until it's cool -- probably another 10 minutes or so.

Once it's back to a normal temp, you can eat it. With any luck, it'll be as creamy and soft as the avocados of your dreams and ready for its destiny -- whether that's toast, guac, or straight spoons.
