  • Marshmallows
  • Butter
  • Rice cereal
  • Parchment or wax paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Frosting
  • Sprinkles or candies
  • Paper straws
  • Plastic baggies
  • Baker’s twine, string, or yarn
  • Heart cookie cutter

Step 1: Make the Rice Krispies Treat mix according to the package. Then place on the greased parchment-paper-lined work surface. I used a large wooden cutting board.

Step 2: Place a greased piece of parchment paper on top of the rice krispies treat mix.

Step 3: Spread out the mix by using the rolling pin on top of the parchment paper. Don’t make the batter too thin or you won’t be able to secure a paper straw into the bottom.

Step 4: Press the heart cookie cutter into your mix.

Step 5: Place the heart cutouts on a piece of parchment paper. Repeat step 3 using the leftover mix. Keep repeating steps 3 and 4 until you use all of the mix.

Step 6: Stick the paper straws into the bottom of the hearts. I found the straws to be really long, so I cut about 1/3 of the straws off.

Step 7: Place the frosting into a bowl and microwave it for about 30 seconds until the consistency is very liquid-y.

Step 8: Drizzle the frosting on top of the heart.

Step 9: Spread your sprinkles on top of the frosting.

Step 10: Place the heart inside the plastic bag and tie it together with a piece of baker’s twine, string, or yarn.

If you don’t have a lot of time but still want to do the project? Here’s a way to speed up the process.

Step 1: Mix chocolate candies into your rice krispies treat mixture.

Step 2: Make your hearts according to the instructions above. This way the candies are already inside the treat and you don’t have to decorate.

Note: I made about 10–12 hearts per batch. You may have to make two batches depending on the size of your child's class.
