Adriana Velez | Oct 19, 2014 Food & Party

pizza cakeI saw it, and I knew I had to have it: the Pizza Cake. This is a recipe that's gone wacko viral, and you can see why. It's four pizzas stacked on top of each other and baked into an ooey, gooey, tomato saucey glob of happiness.

The recipe has appeared on numerous sites, including Pillsbury's by Shawn Syphus of IWashYouDry and on SoGoodBlog by Zorica L.

Want? Well, I wish I could share a slice with you, but I can't. I can do the next best thing, though. We're showing you how to make the Pizza Cake, step by step. It's easier than it looks!

  • Pizza Cake Ingredients

Pepperoni Pizza Cake Recipe adapted from Pillsbury

2 cans refrigerated classic pizza crust dough

    1 1/2 cups pizza sauce

    1 cup sliced pepperoni

    1 tablespoon butter, optional

6-inch baking dish or springform pan (I used my cast iron Dutch oven)

  • Cut Out Rounds

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

Make a template by cutting a 6-inch paper circle.

Divide first can of dough into thirds, roll out each, and use template to cut out 6-inch rounds.

Bake rounds for 8 minutes. Let cool.

  • Cut Out More Rounds

Unroll second can of dough. Roll dough out as much as possible. On long side of dough, cut out two more 6-inch rounds.

Reserve any trimmed dough in case you need it in a later step.

  • Bake Crusts

Bake rounds of dough for 8 minutes and let cool.

  • Roll Out Rest of Dough

Roll out remaining dough again. Cut a long strip of dough at least a 1/2-inch wider than the height of your baking dish, and long enough to line the sides.

  • Line Pan With Dough

This is the trickiest part if you're not a whiz with dough.

Line your pan with parchment paper, bottom and sides.

Now line the sides of your pan with the long roll of dough. As you can see, I ended up doing this in two parts. It's okay! It doesn't have to look perfect.

  • Insert Baked Crust

Place baked crust in bottom of pan.

Get the rest of your ingredients out and ready to layer. This is the fun part!

  • Layer Fillings and Crusts

Spread pizza sauce on crust, place pepperoni slices over it, and sprinkle cheese on top. Cover with second baked pizza round.

    Repeat 3 more layers.

Top with last baked crust, cover with cheese, and add any remaining pepperoni slices.

You can fold overhanging dough over top layer to make a "prettier" crust or not, as I did, for a more traditional-looking pizza crust. Up to you!

  • Bake

Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly. When done, let cool a few minutes inside the pan. Then use parchment paper to remove from pan.

  • Enjoy!

Slice into wedges with a sharp knife.

There really is no polite way to eat this thing. Just grab a lot of napkins and eat it with your hands.

  • God Did Not Make This Cake

I brought the leftover Pizza Cake into the office with instructions on re-heating. Note the message someone left on my Post-It. I guess they liked it? That or they believe in a God of Vengeance. I don't know!
