I make way too many runs to Dunkin' Donuts. Don't judge: It's right down the block ... how can I resist? I usually just grab some coffee but the freshly made donuts always call to me. The days that I give in, I usually just buy two or three chocolate glazed donut holes. I'm going to tell you how you make donuts at home using leftover pizza dough from yesterday's homemade pizza post. Warning: Addiction may ensue.

Chill leftover pizza dough and roll into tiny golf balls. In a shallow bowl, add 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup cinnamon and mix. Set aside.

In a small pot (the smaller the better) add about 2 inches of veggie oil. Heat on medium heat and let the oil heat up. To test that it's ready for the dough, place a wooden object like a spoon or chopstick into the oil. When it's hot enough little bubbles will form around the wooden utensil.

Next, use tongs to gently place in 3 or 4 donut holes at a time. Turn occasionally and cook until the outside is golden brown. Remove and immediately roll in your shallow bowl of sugar and cinnamon. Set on a plate to cool.

Other toppings ideas:

  • Roll them in coconut, finely ground nuts, or chocolate.
  • Drizzle with chocolate or honey.
  • Dip in cool yogurt.

Would you try this at home?
