We fish lovers consider ourselves pretty savvy when it comes to knowing what to buy at the store and what to stay away from. Most of us have heard by now that wild caught fish is preferable to the farm-raised variety so we think, great, no problem -- I'll just pay a little more in exchange for peace of mind.
Uh, not so fast. That's probably exactly what Binh Nguyen was thinking when he picked up a $22.77 package of Kirkland "Fresh Wild Pacific True Cod" at a Costco in South Carolina. And then he discovered the most disgusting thing one could after bringing the fish home: it contained a live, wiggling worm inside of it.
Binh posted a video of his fish purchase with the worm inside on his Facebook page, where it has been shared more than 292,000 times. One thing that's important to know -- despite how unsettling it would be to see a worm in your food -- is that the parasitic roundworm is commonly found in groundfish like cod and that it reportedly isn't dangerous as long as the fish is properly cooked.
The worm is so common, in fact, that inspectors are paid to lay each fish on a table and thoroughly check it for worms -- guess this one escaped unnoticed. To Costco's credit, a representative was incredible honest when asked about the parasite, stating: "Although it's, quite frankly, disgusting, I wish I could tell you it's very very uncommon."
I know people find strange objects in their food all of the time -- from dead animals to fingernails -- and every single example we hear about makes me wish we could subsist on oxygen alone. But there's something particularly creepy about coming face to face with an actual, moving, breathing animal in our food! Remember the woman who found a live frog in her salad? You may recall she decided to keep the thing as a pet -- yeah, good luck doing that with a parasitic worm!
So okay, it happens from time to time. But I'm sure all of us -- myself included -- prefer staying blissfully unaware of just how often it happens.
Warning: don't watch this video before attempting to enjoy a meal!
