Caramel Apple Slices: Are They the Perfect, No-Mess Autumn Treat? (VIDEO)

We Tried It 3

As summer slowly comes to an end, it's time to start thinking about one of my favorite fall treats -- caramel apples! Since caramel apples tend to be a bit messy and sometimes hard to eat, especially for kids, I thought I'd try my hand at the no-mess caramel apple slices recipe I've seen everywhere on Pinterest.

The idea is simple! Cut your apples in half, core out the middle, add lemon juice to prevent browning, and pour in your caramel. But does it work? Is it really mess-free?

Watch this video and see for yourself if this fun recipe is a Pinterest win or a Pinterest fail!:

Coles... Coles_mom

I made these the other day (saw on Pinterest) and I don't know what I did wrong, but they completely didn't work out. The caramel was chewy and soft before it put it in the apples, then I let it set. The caramel hardened and I don't mean just got chewier...I mean I couldn't cut the apple slices with a pick axe. I set them back to room temp and the caramel stayed rock hard. I had to throw then away.

I tried a similar idea but made small apple bites with a melon baller, added a toothpick and dipped in melted Kraft caramels. Looked good on the plate, but overnight in the fridge the caramel separated into watery puddles and slid off the apples. What a mess! Next time I'm trying the store bought caramel dip.

You're supposed to put them in the freezer overnight... Then when you cut them they are perfect! =)
