The Death of the Cupcake Could Be Coming Soon

Say What!? 13

cupcakesAre we finally over cupcakes? Food bloggers and hipster naysayers have been calling the end of the cupcake trend for years now, and I've always laughed them off. But now? We have actual evidence of the cupcake's imminent demise. Trendy cupcake baker Crumbs Bake Shop says their sales are down by 22 percent. Yikes!

A cupcake-industry expert told the Wall Street Journal, "Demand is flat. And quite frankly, people can bake cupcakes." OMG, are cupcake shops going to close? Will the frosting-swirled confections disappear from bakery windows? Will we seriously have to (gulp) bake our own?!?

What is all the fuss about? First of all, people have always been able to bake cupcakes. That's nothing new. We've baked cupcakes before, and we'll continue baking cupcakes. Secondly, I think all that's happened is the cupcake renaissance gave birth to a plethora of other fun, hand-held sweet treats: Whoopie pies, macarons, giant cookies, lemon bars, sticky buns, and so on. If we're eating fewer cupcakes, it's only because there's so much else to eat now.

All this is really about is whether or not hipsters will continue eating cupcakes. And you know what? Who the hell cares. More for me, omphnomnomnom.

What I do care about is that independent bakers (the people who made cupcakes so hot) keep thriving and keep producing amazing treats -- like my favorite cupcake bakers, Robicelli's. They also make brownies, hot chocolate mix, and other goodies. But I still buy myself one of their cupcakes every Friday afternoon.

The cupcake is dead. Long live cupcakes!

Do you give a fig how trendy cupcakes are?

Buzzfeed had a funny montage this morning of baby shower cakes from pinterest,, etc.  That will cheer you up.

Other than that, I have some concern for talented bakers, that did a pretty good job hitting the trend and opening small businesses, but not might be hitting the harsh reality of Krispy Kreme that they need to adapt to stay in business.  What I think they hit the mark on and has a future, especially with women, is you can get away with doing really small portions, of good tasting things, and like the taco bell commercial with the kid in the bjorn (granted thats a dad) the you can walk with, drive with,  or type while eathing, to go type items, for a high markup.   (currently if the kids ever need to eat fast food on a long road trip, they get Arbys Roast beef, as its the least messy and requires no condiments)

If cupcake shops to close, I feel bad for the owners but honestly I like homemade cupcakes SO much better! Every cupcake I have ever had from a bakery or from a cupcake shop has just been WAY too sweet! And way too much frosting! And this is coming from a sugar-aholic!

I'm not big on cooking or baking but cupcakes are very easy to make at home.

I prefer to bake them, takes 20 minutes. I hate paying $3 for a cupcake that ends up dry because it's been sitting for 3 days!

I go to Jone's Brothers Cupcakes every time I'm in Omaha. I love that I can have a little sampling of delicous cake and they make it much better than I ever could. I understand that the trend is ending, but I doubt it will ever die.

I make cupcakes and other individual-sized desserts as a side business, and people are still ordering cupcakes.

I agree with LoveMyBug.  I love cupcakes, but only the homemade ones for the most part.  The fancy cupcake shop ones are way too sweet and rich for me (and I LOVE sweets).

My problem is that they're so overpriced at specialty shops and bakeries.

I'm all about supporting local businesses. I work for one, I've owned them. However, I'm not spending $36.00 for a dozen of cupcakes. Not going to happen. I went to order 4 dozens of cupcakes for my daughter's birthday party and as floored as to how expensive it is for bakery cupcakes. I'll just do them myself.
