Easy Hamentashen Cookies Recipe for Purim That Bursts With Sweet, Buttery Flavor

hamentashenPurim is my favorite of the Jewish holidays for many reason. The first is because it is the Jewish Halloween, which -- let's face it -- is pretty cool. But the second, not so distant one, is Hamentashen. Oh yes. Delish. These little cookies are made to look like Hamen's hat, but taste like a million little bursts of goodness on your tongue.

Every year, without fail, I also search for a great recipe for these delicious, buttery cookies filled with fruit, poppy seeds, or (my favorite) Nutella. The story of Purim is the tale of how the Jewish people were saved from Haman's evil plot to have them all killed. I have never totally understood why that means we all eat his hat, but whatever. It tastes good, so I do not question.

This year, I stumbled upon my favorite recipe yet from Food.com. Even if you are not Jewish, you should still make them because wow. They are good. See below:

Delicious Hamentashen for Purim:

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking powder

water or orange juice

poppy seed filling



Mix everything together until you have a nice dough.

Take piece by piece from the dough and roll it out with a rolling pin on a floured surface until you get a nice disk.
Taking a drinking glass, use it to make a nice circle.

Fill it up with poppy seed filling and close it in the shape of a triangle.

Bake it in a preheated 350 F degree oven for about 30 minutes. Makes 50 to 60 cookies.

Never got the hat thing either. Pretty sure someone explained it to me one but I don't remember.

Can you buy a premade poppy seed filling from the store or do you make it?

Not to nitpick, but this would be a lot more helpful if it had a recipe for the filling.

Love Hamentashen! ODS likes his with conserves or jelly inside. There's a Czech or Polish version (we aren't sure because nobody in their whole family but DH's mom bothered to record family history, and she's lost her marbles) from DH's grandmother that we make with lemon curd, raisin filling, farmer cheese, or poppy seed filling inside, and pinch into diamonds instead of triangles. I enjoy my new, healthy body, but I sometimes really miss eating flour foods. Hamentashen could break me...

30 min is too long to leave in oven, and the amount of OJ or water i guess will depend on the consistency of the rest of the dough. In general this dough is pretty flaky so it takes a bit of working with to get used to, maybe chilling would help, as some other hamentashen recipes suggest, also it would help to mention how thick/thin to roll the dough out, i assumed 1/4 inch thickness

NatAndCo, you fill them with whatever you like.  You can buy premade poppy filling or use jam, jelly, chocolate, nutella, or pie fillings.
