You know how we totally take for granted that there was a time before "sour cream and onion" or "BBQ" was a potato chip flavor? Well, one day, our grandkids might be shocked to hear there was a time before you could wander into a store and scoop up a bag of Chicken and Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread, or Sriracha (a hot sauce often used in Thai and Korean dishes) chips! Yep, those are wild new flavors Lay's will be test-driving nationwide starting next week ...
Once the chips hit the store, lovers of Lay's potato chips will be able to decide which one of the three will be its newest flavor. After trying them, fans will have until May to vote for their faves, and the flavor with the most votes will stay on store shelves. Just call it crowd-sourcing snacking!
I sense a fierce competition that rivals American Idol or a general election! Okay, maybe not exactly, but the outcome of the contest could mean big things for the world of snacks. I have a feeling whatever ends up winning this contest could get really trendy, really quick. Consider "chicken and waffles" or "cheesy garlic bread" or sriracha-flavored pretzels, tortilla chips, crackers ... How weird does that sound?! Well, it could happen. Especially if Lay's knocks it out of the park with the experimental chips.

Even if they don't, though, you gotta hand it to Frito Lay for letting consumers weigh in. It's brilliant ... and most definitely bound to translate to a win-win. They get a hot-selling new chip and consumers get to enjoy a flavor they know they had a hand in choosing. Now if only all snack companies let us vote on new flavors ... I'd probably choose salted caramel or mint chocolate every time. Yes, even for potato chips. Oooh, come to think of it, Lay's is gonna have to have another contest soon!
Which flavor from Lay's would you choose -- Sriracha, Cheesy Garlic Bread, or Chicken and Waffles?!
