Rude Customer Leaves No Tip for Waiter & Blames Obama

Say What!? 47

There’s a time and place to make a political point, but tipping the wait staff is not one of them. Somebody left a note for his waiter instead of a tip, claiming that they didn’t have the money thanks to President Obama’s and the State of California’s progressive tax policies:

As a direct result of Proposition 30 and President Obama’s insistence that I pay “MY FAIR SHARE IN TAXES,” I find that I must cut back on discretionary spending and gratuities.

I wish it didn’t have to be this way for both of us.

Californians passed Prop 30 last November -- it raises tax rates on the rich job creators as well as the sales tax.

To be clear, this California girl did not vote for Prop 30, and was very disappointed that it passed. We are losing too many businesses already, and now even more are going to close up shop and move to Texas. However, I would never take it out on my waiter.

Did this person even bother to find out if the waiter voted for Obama? It’s entirely possible that they voted for Mitt Romney, and even more likely that they sat the election out. Is that even an appropriate conversation to have with one’s waiter? Does the political affiliation of people in the service industry matter more than, oh, let’s say … their level of service? I hope not.

It’s unfair to the waiter to eat out, and then stiff them on the tip because you don’t have enough money. If you have enough money to eat out, you have enough money to tip. Otherwise stay home and make a sandwich. Don’t punish your waiter to make a political statement: That’s not being clever, it’s just being plain old rude. Servers often make minimum wage or less, and rely on tips as part of their income.

If you are going to make a political statement, why not over tip to point out the fact that overall, Republicans are far more generous than Democrats? That would probably go a lot further in changing minds than leaving jerky notes that give the rest of us Obama-critics a bad rap.

Do you think this is a valid political statement or just out of line?

I agree, if you can't afford a tip, don't eat out. We are working class, we don't make much, and when we eat out we still tip at least 20%. It's especially bitchy and rude to try and turn your tacky behavior into a political statement.

Uhhh....news flash. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. All this guy did was make himself look like a douchebag and any valid political statement he may have been trying to make was completely nullified.

Um, don't eat out. It costs less to buy and cook your own food. The only time you shouldn't tip is if you get crappy service. How tacky!

I work hard for my money and I'll eat out if I damned well please. Servers are never owed a gratuity. They earn it. And if I don't have enough cash, too bad, so sad.

I think the the guy who left the note wasn't wrong to do it. Look at the publicity its getting... And perhaps if the server sat out the election, they would a lesson learned.

If you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out!

Wow seriously what an entitled asshat.

Don't go out for a service then refuse to compensate the person who provided the service. You're not unaware of the custom, your not unaware that tips make up a majority of their compensation. Failing to tip even after you've received good service just makes you a jerk, there is no excuse, there is no justification.

That's just fucking nasty. If you can't afford to tip because of Obama, then you need to stay home and make a damn sandwich, because you can't afford to pay the check, either. What a douche. I wish Obama and his entire crew would blow up right now, but I would never take my beef with him out on a server. SMH.

Hey Manderpanders, if you don't have the cash, then don't go out to eat. Man, some people are DUMB when it comes to money.

Manderspanders, sounds like you are both an attention whore and suffering from an inferiority complex that requires you to make others feel bad in order to feel good.  There's no other reason for you to crow about such socially-retarded, self-centered behavior.  For your health, you probably shouldn't dine out at any one sit-down/tip-customary restaurant more than once, your food will probably get "extra special" attention if a server recognizes you on a repeat visit.  Stick with fast food or buffet-style dining, and try not to face others while eating, if your table manners are as lovely as your basic demeanor.

If you go to a full-service restaurant and you receive you meal without having to go back to the kitchen yourself, the server actually IS owed a gratuity mandapander. As the level of service goes up from the bare minimum, the tip should go up.

I really hope that someday when your working "so hard" for your money, some asshole like you decides that they don't actually owe you for the work you just did and shorts you because "they work hard and if they don't have the money to pay you too bad so sad"

This is America,, everyone knows servers work for tips. They get paid $2.13/hour. That covers the taxes that they HAVE to pay based on a percentage of their sales during a shift...weather they actually earned tips on those sales or not!
